1. Getting Started with the QuizMagic AI Quiz Generator
This section covers what QuizMagic is, who it is built for, and what you need to get started.
What is QuizMagic?
We built QuizMagic, an AI quiz generator, for teachers, corporate trainers, and students. It turns any source material, such as a PDF, a Word document, a PowerPoint deck, a YouTube video, or a typed topic, into a complete, auto-graded quiz or structured study summary in under 60 seconds. Because the platform handles question generation, distribution, grading, and analytics in one place, you no longer need separate tools for each step.
Who is QuizMagic designed for?
QuizMagic serves four main groups, each with a distinct workflow.
Teachers and professors use it to create formative assessments, end-of-unit exams, and homework quizzes from their existing lecture materials, without writing questions by hand. For the full teacher workflow, see the AI quiz maker for teachers guide.
Corporate trainers and L&D teams use it to convert training manuals, compliance documents, and onboarding materials into trackable knowledge checks with automatic grading and per-employee analytics.
Tutors and parents use it to generate targeted practice questions from textbook chapters and study guides, tailored to each student’s current level.
Students use it to turn their own lecture notes, YouTube lectures, and reading materials into self-test quizzes and revision summaries. For the student workflow, see the automated quiz maker for students guide.
What languages does QuizMagic support?
By default, this AI quiz generator produces content in the same language as your source material. Upload a French PDF, and you get a French quiz. Paste a Spanish YouTube transcript, and the questions come out in Spanish. You can also override the detected language using the Output Language dropdown before you generate, so you can, for example, produce English questions from a document written in another language. It supports more than 30 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, Arabic, Hindi, and Tagalog. The platform interface itself is currently in English only.
Which browsers and devices work with QuizMagic?
QuizMagic runs in all modern browsers, including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge, on desktop, tablet, and mobile. No installation needed. Students access quizzes directly through a shared link on any device. For the best experience with essay grading and Smart Sharing session management, we recommend desktop Chrome or Safari.
Do I need to whitelist any domains for school networks?
Yes, if your school network filters outbound traffic. For reliable access, whitelist the following domains:
quizmagic.io*.supabase.co*.youtube.com(required for YouTube-to-Quiz transcript fetching)
2. How the AI Quiz Generator Works
This section covers how quiz generation works, what inputs the AI accepts, and how to configure the output. For a full walkthrough, see the Quick Start Guide.
How do I generate my first quiz?
The process takes four steps, each under 30 seconds.
- Create a free account at quizmagic.io. No credit card needed.
- From your dashboard, choose your source: paste text, upload a file, paste a YouTube link, or type a topic.
- Set your quiz type, question count, difficulty, output language, and optionally a cognitive framework.
- Click Generate Quiz. Your questions appear in 20 to 60 seconds.
What input sources can I use?
QuizMagic accepts six source types. Two work on the Free plan indefinitely; the remaining four require Premium or a premium trial credit.
| Source | Free Plan | Premium |
|---|---|---|
| Enter Topic | Yes | Yes |
| Enter Text | Yes (up to 100,000 characters) | Yes (up to 500,000 characters) |
| File Upload (PDF, Word, PPT, Excel, images) | No | Yes |
| YouTube Link | No | Yes |
| My Uploads (reuse previously uploaded files) | No | Yes |
| Multi-Source Quiz (combine multiple sources) | No | Yes |
What question types can I generate?
Six question formats are available. You can combine four of them in Mixed Mode; Essay is a standalone quiz type.
- Multiple Choice (MCQ) – one correct answer plus configurable distractors (2 to 5 options)
- True/False – a factual statement marked correct or incorrect
- Fill in the Blanks – a sentence with a key term removed, graded with flexible matching
- Short Answer – an open-ended written response, AI-graded by conceptual match
- Essay – an extended prompt with AI-assisted rubric-based grading (Premium with tokens)
- Mixed – combines MCQ, True/False, Fill in the Blanks, and Short Answer in a single quiz
For a full comparison of when each format works best, see the types of assessment questions guide.
What is a Cognitive Framework, and why does it matter?
A Cognitive Framework tells the AI what kind of thinking each question should demand, rather than letting the AI choose at random. Without a framework, most AI quiz generators default to Remembering-level questions like recall and definitions, because they are the easiest to extract from text. Choosing a framework ensures your quiz tests a deeper understanding instead.
QuizMagic supports three frameworks, all available at no cost on every plan.
Bloom’s Taxonomy organizes questions by cognitive process across six levels: Remembering, Understanding, Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating. You set the distribution per level, for example, 30% Remembering, 40% Applying, 30% Analyzing.
SOLO Taxonomy organizes questions by the structural complexity of the expected answer: Unistructural, Multistructural, Relational, and Extended Abstract.
Mixed (Bloom’s + SOLO) combines both frameworks into 11 curated pairings for advanced, rubric-aligned assessments.
For the full configuration guide, see How to Use Cognitive Levels in Quiz Generation.
What is the Quiz Regenerator?
The Quiz Regenerator produces a fresh set of questions from the same source material as a saved quiz. This is especially useful for retakes, multiple class sections, and practice sessions where repeating the same questions would undermine assessment value. The Regenerator applies question-order shuffling, option-position shuffling, and optionally AI-driven question rephrasing. For setup instructions, see How to Use the Quiz Regenerator.
How long does generation take?
Most quizzes generate in 20 to 60 seconds from any source type. QuizMagic processes larger question sets (50 to 100 questions) in batches, which may take a little longer. The cognitive level distribution is split proportionally across batches, so your final quiz reflects your configured settings throughout.
3. Files, Sources, and Upload Limits
This section covers file format support, size limits, and what happens to your uploaded files after generation.
Which file formats does QuizMagic accept?
| Category | Formats |
|---|---|
| Documents | PDF, Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx), plain text (.txt) |
| Images | JPG, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP |
All image formats include scanned documents and photos of handwritten notes. Importantly, the AI reads image content natively, interpreting labeled diagrams, charts, and equations inside image-based PDFs in context rather than stripping them to plain text.
How does the AI quiz generator read my uploaded files?
QuizMagic sends files directly as binary data to a multimodal AI model. There is no separate OCR or text-extraction step. As a result, the AI sees images, diagrams, charts, equations, and slide layouts inside your file in their original context. This means image-heavy PDFs, scanned documents, and visual slide decks work significantly better here than in tools that rely on OCR alone. For more on the PDF workflow, see How to Generate a Quiz from a PDF.
What are the file size and count limits?
| Free | Premium | |
|---|---|---|
| Files per quiz session | Not available | Up to 10 |
| Maximum size per file | Not available | 10 MB |
| Maximum total upload per session | Not available | 20 MB |
If a file exceeds 10 MB, compress it at wecompress.com or split it into sections before uploading.
Is there a character limit for pasted text?
Yes. The Free plan caps pasted text at 100,000 characters, while the Premium plan allows up to 500,000 characters.
Do YouTube videos require captions?
Yes. The YouTube-to-Quiz feature extracts the video’s transcript to generate questions, so the video must have captions available, either manually uploaded or auto-generated by YouTube. QuizMagic uses a four-tier transcript extraction system that succeeds on videos that other tools cannot process, but videos with captions entirely disabled cannot be used. For supported URL formats and troubleshooting tips, see How to Generate a Quiz from a YouTube Video.
What is My Uploads?
My Uploads is a library of every file you have previously uploaded to QuizMagic. Premium users can upload files in advance and reuse them across multiple quiz sessions. Note that My Uploads contains source files only. Generated quizzes are stored separately in Saved Quizzes. To access My Uploads, click the shortcut button at the top of your QuizMagic dashboard.
4. Study Summaries
QuizMagic includes a Summary Generator in addition to its AI quiz generator. This section explains how the two features work alongside each other.
Can QuizMagic generate study summaries instead of quizzes?
Yes. The Summary Generator produces clean, structured study summaries from any source, such as a file, pasted text, a YouTube video, or a typed topic. Summaries are saved to Saved Summaries and can be shared with students via a link, exactly like quiz sharing.
Do summaries count against my generation limit?
Yes. Quizzes and summaries share the same generation counter. Free users have a combined limit of 2 generations per day and 10 per month. Premium users get unlimited generation under fair use.
Can I share a summary with students?
Yes. The sharing flow for summaries works just like it does for quizzes. Share a link, and students can view the summary on any device. No account needed.
5. Sharing and Auto-Grading
This section explains the two sharing modes, how auto-grading works for each question type, and how to manage results. For the full Smart Sharing setup guide, see How to Use Smart Sharing.
What sharing options are available?
QuizMagic offers two sharing modes with different levels of tracking and control.
| Feature | Simple Sharing | Smart Sharing |
|---|---|---|
| Available on | Free and Premium | Free and Premium |
| Student account required | No | No |
| Student name collected | No, anonymous | Yes |
| Auto-grading | Yes, basic | Yes, full, saved per student |
| Real-time progress tracking | No | Yes |
| Per-student answer review | No | Yes |
| Anti-cheating monitoring | No | Yes (Premium only) |
| Teacher score override | No | Yes |
| Bulk results export | No | Yes, CSV and PDF/DOCX |
| Grade release control | Not applicable | Yes, per attempt or session-wide |
How does auto-grading work for each question type?
Each question type uses a different grading mechanism, triggered the moment a student submits.
Multiple Choice and True/False use exact match against the stored correct answer. Grading is instant and fully automatic.
Fill in the Blanks uses flexible matching. The system accepts minor spelling variations and any alternate answers you define when setting up the quiz. Grading is also instant.
Short Answer uses AI-assisted conceptual matching. The AI evaluates whether the student’s response captures the core idea of the model answer, even when the exact wording differs. For example, a student who writes “ATP is the cell’s energy currency” and one who writes “cells use ATP to power metabolic reactions” both receive credit for an ATP function question.
Essay uses rubric-based AI grading that you configure in Smart Sharing before distributing the quiz. The AI produces a suggested score per criterion and a narrative feedback summary. You then review and finalize scores before releasing results to students. For the setup guide, see How to Set Up AI Essay Grading.
How does real-time tracking work in Smart Sharing?
While students take a Smart Sharing quiz, your dashboard shows who is currently active. The system receives a heartbeat signal from each active student every 30 seconds. If a student’s heartbeat is absent for more than 5 minutes, the system marks them as inactive. This gives you live session visibility without requiring students to check in manually.
Can I randomize question and answer order?
Yes. Smart Sharing supports both question-order randomization and option-order randomization for Multiple Choice questions. The randomization applies intelligently. It shuffles MCQ options without disrupting Fill in the Blanks or Short Answer questions, which do not have option positions to shuffle.
Can I override a score the AI assigned?
Yes. In the Smart Sharing dashboard, open any student’s attempt, adjust individual question scores using the score slider, and save. The override is recorded per attempt and immediately updates the student’s composite score.
How do students receive their grades?
Grades are controlled by the Grade Release Toggle in the Results dashboard. By default, grades for Short Answers and Essays are hidden from students until you release them. You can release grades to individual students as you finalize each submission, or release all grades at once across the session when every attempt has been reviewed. To access released grades from the Student Dashboard, students need a QuizMagic account. A free account is sufficient.
How do I export quiz results?
Smart Sharing offers two export formats. Bulk CSV produces one row per student attempt, with summary scores, individual question results, and session timing data, ready for gradebook import. Per-student PDF or DOCX produces an individual answer sheet for each student, suitable for records or grade-review conversations.
6. AI Essay Grading
AI essay grading is available exclusively to Premium subscribers and uses a token system. This section explains how tokens work and how grading is configured.
How does AI essay grading work?
When a student submits an essay response, the AI reads the full written text and evaluates it against the grading criteria you set up in Smart Sharing before distributing the quiz. The AI assigns a score per criterion and generates a written narrative explaining the score. You then review and optionally adjust each score before releasing results.
How do essay tokens work?
Premium subscribers receive 5 essay grading tokens per month. One token grades up to 100 individual essay responses in a single Smart Sharing session. For example, a 4-question essay quiz taken by 25 students produces 100 individual responses, covered entirely by 1 token. Tokens reset monthly at the start of your billing cycle.
Note that essay grading tokens are not included in the free premium trial. Tokens are only available on an active Premium subscription.
Can I buy additional tokens?
Yes. Additional essay token packs are available for $1.00 per token, with each token covering 100 essay responses. Additional tokens do not expire and are only drawn from after your included monthly tokens run out.
What happens to unused monthly tokens?
Monthly tokens expire at the end of your billing cycle and do not roll over. However, purchased additional tokens never expire. They carry forward to future months.
Can I customize the grading criteria?
Yes. Smart Sharing includes a Grading Criteria panel where you assign percentage weights to six available criteria: Relevance, Grammar and Spelling, Coherence, Depth of Analysis, Factual Accuracy, and Originality. You activate only the criteria relevant to your assignment and assign weights that sum to exactly 100%. For the full rubric configuration guide, see How to Set Up AI Essay Grading.
7. Anti-Cheating and Assessment Integrity
QuizMagic’s anti-cheating system is a feature you activate per Smart Sharing session. This section explains what it monitors and how to interpret the data it produces. For the full setup guide, see How to Enable Anti-Cheating Features.
What does the anti-cheating system monitor?
When you enable anti-cheating for a Smart Sharing session, the system monitors the following behaviors throughout the quiz:
- Tab switching – navigating to another browser tab or window
- Window blur (desktop only) – the quiz window losing focus while the student uses another application
- Copy/paste attempts – using keyboard shortcuts or right-click to copy from or paste into the quiz
- Right-click events – opening the browser context menu
- Fullscreen exit – leaving fullscreen if fullscreen mode is enforced
- Developer tools access – opening browser developer tools (F12 or Inspect Element)
Why is window-blur detection disabled on mobile?
Mobile devices generate frequent blur events from system notifications, incoming calls, screen rotation, and other system-level interruptions. Because these would create a high volume of false positives, flagging students who are legitimately taking the quiz, the system suppresses window-blur detection on screens narrower than 768 pixels. That said, tab-switch detection, copy/paste blocking, and right-click blocking all remain active on mobile.
What happens when a student triggers a violation?
The quiz auto-submits and closes immediately. The score is calculated based on everything the student completed before the auto-submission.
Can students bypass attempt limits using incognito mode?
No. QuizMagic combines browser fingerprinting with name, email, and session ID matching to identify returning attempts. Together, these measures block duplicate attempts even when a student switches to an incognito window, clears cookies, or uses a different browser session on the same device. For attempts from a genuinely different physical device, pairing fingerprinting with in-person supervision provides the strongest protection.
8. Subscriptions, Billing, and Account Management

Note that AI essay grading tokens are not included in the trial credits.
When do Free plan limits reset?
The daily limit of 2 generations resets at midnight in your local time zone. The monthly limit of 10 generations resets on the first day of each calendar month.
How does billing work?
Premium plans do not renew automatically. If you do not plan to renew, no action is needed. Your subscription simply expires. You will receive renewal reminders before your expiry date. Payments are processed via HitPay or PayPal.
What is your refund policy?
QuizMagic offers a 15-day money-back guarantee on Premium subscriptions. Contact support within 15 days of your most recent charge to request a refund. Requests from accounts where Premium features have been used extensively before the refund request may not qualify. See the Refund Policy for full terms.
What happens to my quizzes if my Premium subscription expires?
Your saved quizzes and summaries remain intact. QuizMagic does not delete your content. This means your work is always preserved between billing periods.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile, then select Delete Account, and confirm the action with the emailed verification code. All your data is permanently removed from QuizMagic’s servers. This action cannot be undone.
9. Data Security and Privacy
Is my data secure?
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit using HTTPS and encrypted at rest in the database. QuizMagic never sells user data to third parties. Quiz content and uploaded files are accessible only to the account that created them, enforced through row-level security at the database level.
Does QuizMagic use my uploaded content to train AI models?
No. Uploaded files are used solely to generate your quiz or summary. They are not shared with other users or used to train AI models outside your session.
