Learning how to create a quiz with AI in QuizMagic takes less time than writing your first question manually. Upload any source material, such as a PDF, a PowerPoint deck, a YouTube video, or a plain text document, tell the AI what you want, and a complete, ready-to-share quiz appears in under 60 seconds. This guide walks you through every step from creating your account to reviewing your first graded results.
If you have already completed setup and are looking for a specific feature, use the Related Articles section at the bottom of this page to jump directly to what you need.
Free plan note: Every new account starts with 5 premium trial credits that give you temporary access to all Premium features like file uploads, YouTube to Quiz, Smart Sharing with anti-cheating, and more. No credit card required to start. See Free vs Premium Plan: Full Feature Comparison for details on what each plan includes long-term.
Step 1: Create Your Account
Go to quizmagic.io and click Sign Up. You can register with your email address or with a Google account. No credit card is required.
Once your account is created, you land on your dashboard. The dashboard gives you access to everything in one place.
| Dashboard section | What it contains |
|---|---|
| Saved Quizzes | All quizzes you have generated and saved |
| Saved Summaries | AI-generated summaries from your source materials |
| Smart Sharing | All your graded sharing sessions and results |
| My Uploads | Files you have previously uploaded for reuse |
| Student Dashboard | A simplified view for student-facing quiz access |
The Quiz Generator is the starting point for creating any quiz. Access it from the “Ready to Create a Quiz?” panel in the center of the dashboard.
Step 2: Choose How to Create a Quiz with AI
QuizMagic offers six source input methods. Choose the one that matches the material you have available.
Enter Topic
Type any subject, learning objective, or topic directly. For example, “The Water Cycle” or “Data Privacy Regulations for Corporate Compliance.” The AI generates questions from its knowledge base about that topic.
This is the fastest way to start when you do not have a document ready. It works well for broad, well-defined topics and for getting a sense of the question quality before uploading your own materials.
Enter Text
Paste any block of text into the input field. Lecture notes, handout content, article excerpts, policy documents, or any other text up to 100,000 characters (Free) or 500,000 characters (Premium) are accepted. The AI generates questions based on the actual content you paste rather than from general knowledge about the topic.
Upload File (Premium and trial credits)
Upload a file directly from your computer. QuizMagic accepts the following formats.
| Format | Examples |
|---|---|
| Textbook chapters, handouts, research papers, training manuals | |
| Word | .docx lecture notes, reports, policy documents |
| PowerPoint | .pptx and .ppt lecture slide decks |
| Excel | .xlsx data sets with textual content |
| Plain text | .txt files of any kind |
| Images | JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP, WebP — including scanned documents and photos of handwritten notes |
Free plan users without remaining trial credits cannot access file uploads. The maximum file size is 10 MB per file. Premium users can upload up to 10 files totaling 50 MB in a single quiz session.
For a complete guide to generating from files, see How to Generate a Quiz from a PDF.
YouTube Link (Premium and trial credits)
Paste the URL of any public or unlisted YouTube video that has captions. QuizMagic extracts the full transcript using a four-tier fallback system and generates questions from the actual spoken content of the video. There is no maximum video length for Premium users.
For caption requirements, supported URL formats, and troubleshooting, see How to Generate a Quiz from a YouTube Video.
My Uploads (Premium and trial credits)
Select a file you have previously uploaded without uploading it again. All files you upload are saved to your My Uploads library automatically. This is particularly useful when you want to generate multiple quizzes from the same source material. For example, a formative check at the start of a unit, a mid-unit review, and a summative assessment, all from the same textbook chapter PDF.
Multi-Source Quiz (Premium and trial credits)
Combine multiple sources into a single quiz. Upload several files, paste text, and add a YouTube URL simultaneously, and the AI generates questions that draw from all of them together. This is the most powerful input option, particularly useful for end-of-unit comprehensive assessments that draw from multiple weeks of source material.
Step 3: Configure Your Quiz Settings
After choosing your source, configure the following settings before clicking Generate.
Quiz Type
Select the question format you want the AI to produce.
| Type | What it generates | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Multiple Choice | One correct answer plus 2 to 5 distractors | Broad content coverage, formative checks |
| True/False | A statement marked correct or incorrect | Fast fact verification |
| Fill in the Blanks | A sentence with a key term removed | Vocabulary and terminology recall |
| Short Answer | An open-ended written response | Conceptual understanding, applied reasoning |
| Essay | An extended written prompt | Analysis, argumentation, synthesis |
| Mixed | Combination of MCQ, True/False, Fill in the Blanks, and Short Answer | Comprehensive multi-depth assessments |
Note: Essay is a separate quiz type and cannot be combined with other formats in Mixed Mode. For essay quiz configuration including AI grading setup, see How to Set Up AI Essay Grading.
Number of Questions
| Plan | Range |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 to 10 questions per quiz |
| Premium | 1 to 100 questions per quiz |
For most formative checks and exit tickets, 5 to 10 questions is the right range. For summative unit assessments, 15 to 30 questions provide the coverage needed to draw reliable conclusions across the full content area.
Difficulty
Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard. The difficulty setting calibrates the cognitive complexity of question stems and the plausibility of distractors simultaneously. Medium is the right starting point for most classroom quizzes. Use Hard for exam preparation and advanced coursework.
Output Language
The AI detects your source material’s language automatically by default. Alternatively, select a specific target language from the dropdown to generate questions in a different language from your source. More than 30 languages are supported.
Cognitive Framework (Optional)
This setting is optional but significantly improves the pedagogical alignment of your quiz. Instead of letting the AI choose the cognitive level of each question independently, you specify the Bloom’s Taxonomy level, SOLO Taxonomy level, or Mixed (Bloom’s + SOLO) combination you want every question to target.
All three frameworks are free for every user. For the full configuration guide, see How to Use Cognitive Levels (Bloom’s and SOLO) in Quiz Generation.
Additional Notes (Optional)
Type any specific instructions you want the AI to follow before generating. For example:
- “Focus only on Chapter 3. Ignore the introduction.”
- “These questions are for a first-year nursing cohort.”
- “Generate questions based on the case studies only, not the theoretical sections.”
- “Use simple vocabulary appropriate for non-native English speakers.”
The AI reads your notes alongside the source material and adjusts the question generation accordingly.
Step 4: Generate Your Quiz
Click Generate Quiz. Most quizzes complete generation in 20 to 60 seconds. Larger question sets from longer documents may take up to 90 seconds. A progress indicator shows that the system is working.
When generation completes, all questions appear in the Generated Quiz section, which serves as the quiz editor.
Step 5: Review and Edit
Do not skip this step. A 60-second review before sharing catches the most common issues: a distractor that is too obviously wrong, a Fill in the Blanks item that accepts multiple reasonable answers, or a Short Answer prompt that is too vague to evaluate consistently.
In the quiz editor, you can do the following.
Edit any question. Click the question stem or any answer option to rewrite it directly.
Delete a question. Remove any question that does not suit your assessment by clicking the delete icon.
Add your own questions. Click Add Question to insert a manually written question alongside the AI-generated ones.
When you are satisfied, click Save Quiz. The quiz appears in your Saved Quizzes dashboard.
Step 6: Share the Quiz with Students
QuizMagic offers two sharing modes. Choose based on whether you need individual student tracking.
Simple Sharing
Simple Sharing generates a public link or QR code that students access on any device without creating an account. Responses are anonymous; no names are collected. Auto-grading handles Multiple Choice, True/False, and Fill in the Blanks instantly. Short Answer and Essay receive AI-assisted grading based on conceptual match to the model answer, so Simple Sharing is not available when either of these two is part of the quiz.
Use Simple Sharing for low-stakes practice quizzes, self-study, and any situation where individual tracking is not needed.
To share: In the Saved Quizzes dashboard, click Sharing Options on your quiz card, then select Simple Sharing. From there, enable the Simple Sharing toggle. Copy the link or display the QR code.
Smart Sharing
Smart Sharing captures student names and optionally emails before they begin. It activates the full analytics dashboard, enables per-session controls, and unlocks anti-cheating monitoring.
Key settings you configure inside Smart Sharing:
| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Session Name | Identifies the session in your results dashboard |
| Time Limit | Closes the quiz automatically when the timer expires |
| Allow Review | Controls whether students see correct answers after submitting |
| Anti-Cheating | Activates tab-switch detection, copy/paste blocking, right-click blocking, and DevTools monitoring |
| Attempt Limits | Restricts how many times each student can take the quiz. The default is Off, which means students can only take the quiz once. |
| Scoring Settings | Determines the point value for each question type or for each question. The default is 1 point for every question. |
For the full Smart Sharing configuration guide, see How to Use Smart Sharing for Secure Quiz Distribution and Auto-Grading.
Student access: Students do not need a QuizMagic account to take the quiz. They click the link or scan the QR code and begin immediately on any device with a browser and internet connection.
Step 7: Review Results
For Smart Sharing, after students submit, results appear in your results dashboard. Results are not collected for Simplr Sharing.
Smart Sharing results
Smart Sharing gives you significantly deeper data, organized around four summary cards.
| Summary card | Threshold | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Need Review | Below 50% correct | Students who need reteaching or additional support |
| High Performance | Above 80% correct | Students who have demonstrated strong command of the material |
| Struggle Points | Above 45 seconds average per question | Students who worked hard but found the quiz cognitively difficult |
| Possible Guesses | Below 3 seconds average per question | Students who answered too quickly to have read the question — potentially disengaged |
In addition to the summary cards, the analytics dashboard shows per-question success rates, average time per question, distractor pick breakdowns for Multiple Choice questions, and individual violation counts if anti-cheating monitoring was enabled.
For a complete guide to interpreting and acting on quiz analytics, see How to Read Your Quiz Analytics Dashboard.
Step 8: Export if Needed
Every quiz can be exported at any time from the Saved Quizzes dashboard. Open/view the quiz and then click on the Export button at the top.
Export to PDF. Produces a clean student copy and a separate answer key PDF. Suitable for printing and paper-based delivery.
Export to Word (.docx). Produces an editable student copy and answer key. Suitable for further customization or embedding in a larger document.
For branded exports with your school or company logo, custom header, and footer, go to the Edit Header/Footer section first before exporting.
Common First-Time Questions
How long does generation take? Most quizzes generate in 20 to 60 seconds from any source type. Larger question sets from lengthy documents occasionally take up to 90 seconds.
Can I regenerate a quiz from the same source? Yes. Use the Quiz Regenerator to produce a fresh version of any of your quizzes. The Regenerator applies question-order shuffling, option-position shuffling, and optionally AI-driven question rephrasing. See How to Use the Quiz Regenerator for setup instructions.
Why do I see a Premium badge on some source options? File uploads, YouTube links, My Uploads, and Multi-Source Quiz all require either an active Premium subscription or a remaining premium trial credit. Topic and text inputs are available on the Free plan indefinitely.
How does auto-grading work? Multiple Choice, True/False, and Fill in the Blanks questions are graded by exact or flexible match against the correct answer the moment a student submits. Short Answer uses AI-assisted conceptual matching. Essay questions use a rubric you define in Smart Sharing before sharing. For the full auto-grading walkthrough, see Auto-Grading Quizzes: How It Works.
Can I share a quiz I already generated with a different class? Yes. Any saved quiz can be reshared as many times as you want. Each new Smart Sharing session generates a unique link and produces independent analytics results, so two class periods taking the same quiz produce two separate result sets.
Does QuizMagic work on phones and tablets? Yes. Students can take quizzes on any device with a browser and internet connection: phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop. The quiz interface is fully responsive. The quiz generator and results dashboard are also accessible on mobile, though they work most comfortably on a larger screen.
