Choosing between the free vs premium plans comes down to one question: what does your assessment workflow actually require? QuizMagic’s Free plan is genuinely functional for getting started — it gives you real quiz generation, real sharing, and real auto-grading at no cost. The Premium plan removes the limits that matter when you are running a full classroom or training program and need more questions, more sources, and more control over how quizzes are distributed and graded.
This article explains every difference between the two plans, what the Premium trial credits give you, and how to decide which plan fits your situation.
Start Here: Your Free Premium Trial Credits
Every new QuizMagic Free account starts with 5 premium trial credits. These credits give you temporary access to all Premium features so you can try the full platform before committing to anything.
Each credit covers one quiz generation session using any Premium feature: file uploads, YouTube to Quiz, multi-source quizzes, AI essay grading, Smart Sharing with anti-cheating, and everything else. You do not need a credit card to receive the trial credits.
Once your 5 trial credits are used, your account switches to the standard Free plan limits. At that point, the dashboard shows which source options require an upgrade: file uploads, YouTube, My Uploads, and Multi-Source Quiz. They are marked with a Premium badge, while topic-based and text-based generation remain available at no cost.
Good news: The 5 trial credits never expire. You can use them across multiple sessions and at any pace — there is no time pressure to try the features within a specific window.

What the Free Plan Includes
The Free plan is designed for teachers, students, and trainers who want to try AI-powered quiz generation without any financial commitment. Here is what you can do on the Free plan indefinitely.
Quiz generation
You can generate up to 10 quizzes per month (2 per day) with up to 10 questions per quiz. Both limits reset at the start of each calendar month. The generation sources available are Enter Topic (type a subject or learning objective and let the AI build questions from scratch) and Enter Text (paste up to 100,000 characters of your own content). Both are genuinely useful — a 100,000-character limit accommodates roughly 15,000 to 20,000 words, which is enough for a substantial textbook chapter or training document.
Question types and cognitive frameworks
All five question types are available on the Free plan: Multiple Choice, True/False, Fill-in-the-Blanks, Short Answer, and Essay. You can generate any of these from your topic or pasted text.
All three cognitive frameworks: Bloom’s Taxonomy, SOLO Taxonomy, and the Mixed (Bloom’s + SOLO) framework — are also fully available on the Free plan at no extra cost. See How to Use Cognitive Levels in Quiz Generation for setup instructions.
Sharing and auto-grading
Free users get unlimited Simple Sharing — an anonymous public link or QR code that allows students to take the quiz on any device without creating an account. Objective question types (MCQ, True/False, Fill-in-the-Blanks) are auto-graded instantly.
Free users also get unlimited Smart Sharing for non-essay quizzes only. Smart Sharing captures student names and auto-grades quizzes. It enables per-question analytics and adds controls like time limits as well as question and choice randomization.
Saving and exporting
You can save unlimited quizzes and summaries on the Free plan — there is no storage cap. Every saved quiz can be exported to PDF and Word at any time, including a separate answer key. The export does not include custom branding (logo, header, footer) on the Free plan.
What Premium Adds
Premium removes the generation limits, unlocks every source type, and adds the features that matter most for graded classroom and training assessments.
Unlimited generation
The 10-quiz monthly limit and 10-question-per-quiz cap both disappear on Premium. The character limit for pasted text expands from 100,000 to 500,000 characters, which accommodates several full chapters or a complete training manual in a single paste.
File uploads and multi-source quizzes
This is the single feature that most teachers cite as the reason they upgrade. Upload any file — PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, plain text, JPG, PNG, GIF, or WebP images — and the AI generates questions from the actual document rather than from a generic topic description.
Multi-Source Quiz goes further: combine multiple files, pasted text, and a YouTube video into a single comprehensive quiz. This is particularly useful for end-of-unit exams that draw from multiple weeks of source material simultaneously.
YouTube to Quiz
Paste any public or unlisted YouTube URL, and QuizMagic extracts the full video transcript and generates questions from what was actually said in the video. There is no maximum video length — Premium users can process hour-long university lectures, full webinars, and multi-hour MOOC modules. The YouTube to Quiz generator guide covers URL formats, caption requirements, and best practices.
Unlimited Smart Sharing with Anti-Cheating Enabled
Free users get unlimited Smart Sharing, but no Anti-Cheating feature. Premium users get unlimited Smart Sharing sessions with Anti-Cheating across all quiz types, including Essay quizzes. Every Smart Sharing session includes:
- Student name and optional email capture
- Real-time progress tracking (30-second heartbeats)
- Per-question analytics: success rate, average time, distractor pick breakdown
- Struggle Points and Possible Guesses summary cards
- Grade release toggle
- Score override per student
- QR code download
- Per-student PDF and Word answer sheets
- Bulk CSV results export
See the Smart Sharing guide for a full walkthrough of every setting.
Anti-cheating monitoring
Premium enables the full anti-cheating suite for any Smart Sharing session. When activated, the system monitors:
- Tab-switch detection
- Copy/paste blocking
- Right-click blocking
- DevTools detection
- Window-blur detection (desktop only)
- Warning-then-auto-submit flow
- Browser fingerprint-based duplicate attempt prevention
See How to Enable Anti-Cheating Features for the complete setup guide.
AI Essay Grading
Premium includes 5 AI Essay Grading tokens per month, where each token covers up to 50 essay responses. That means Premium users can AI-grade up to 250 essays per month within the included token allocation. Additional tokens are available for purchase if you need more.
Essay grading evaluates each response against up to six configurable criteria: Relevance, Grammar and Spelling, Coherence, Depth of Analysis, Factual Accuracy, and Originality. You assign percentage weights to each criterion in Smart Sharing before distributing the quiz. See How to Set Up AI Essay Grading for the full configuration guide.
Custom branding on exports
Premium exports include a custom branding layer: upload your school or company logo, set a custom header and footer, and include student information fields (name, ID, class, date). All PDF and Word exports carry your branding rather than the default QuizMagic format.
Priority support
Premium users receive priority routing for support requests, which means faster response times for technical issues and billing questions.
Which Plan Is Right for You?
Not every teacher or trainer needs Premium immediately. Here is a practical guide to which plan fits which situation.

- Are trying QuizMagic for the first time and want to evaluate the quiz quality before committing
- Generate quizzes from topic prompts or pasted text rather than uploaded files
- Run fewer than 10 quiz sessions per month
- Use Simple Sharing for low-stakes practice quizzes where individual tracking is not required
- Have already used your 5 premium trial credits and want to continue with basic generation at no cost
Upgrade to Premium if you
- Need to generate quizzes from uploaded PDFs, PowerPoints, Word documents, or images
- Want to convert YouTube lecture videos into quizzes
- Run more than 10 quiz sessions per month or need more than 10 questions per quiz

- Assign essay questions and need AI-assisted grading with criterion-based feedback
- Teach multiple class sections or manage a team that needs consistent, trackable assessments
- Need branded PDF and Word exports for institutional or professional use
Not sure yet? Use your 5 premium trial credits first. Generate a quiz from a PDF, and run a Smart Sharing session with anti-cheating enabled. You will have a clear answer about whether Premium fits your workflow before spending anything.
Understanding the Dashboard as a Free User
After your 5 premium trial credits are used, your dashboard shows a clear view of which features are available on the Free plan and which require an upgrade.
The Ready to Create a Quiz? panel shows six source options in a grid. Two remain fully accessible on the Free plan:
- Enter Topic — let the AI generate questions from a subject or learning objective you type
- Enter Text — paste your own content up to 100,000 characters
Four are marked with a Premium badge and require an upgrade to use:
- Upload File — PDF, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and image uploads
- YouTube Link — generate quizzes from any YouTube video
- My Uploads — reuse files you have previously uploaded
- Multi-Source Quiz — combine multiple sources into one quiz
Under More Tools, two additional tools appear:
- Quiz Regenerator — create fresh versions of existing quizzes (available to all users)
- Summary Generator — generate summaries from source material (10 per month on Free, unlimited on Premium)
The top navigation bar gives you access to your Saved Quizzes, Saved Summaries, Smart Sharing sessions, My Uploads library, and Student Dashboard regardless of plan.
Free plan reminder: The banner at the top of your dashboard shows your current daily and monthly generation count (for example, “2/2 today — 7/10 this month”). When you reach either limit, generation is paused until the limit resets. Daily limits reset at midnight. Monthly limits reset on the first day of each calendar month.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a credit card to sign up for the Free plan? No. The Free plan requires no payment information at any stage. You create an account with your email address and start generating immediately. A credit card is only required when you choose to upgrade to Premium.
What happens to my quizzes if I downgrade from Premium to Free? Your saved quizzes and summaries remain in your account indefinitely — there is no storage limit on either plan. However, after downgrading, you can no longer generate new quizzes from uploaded files or YouTube, and new generations are subject to Free plan limits. Quizzes you generated while on Premium remain fully accessible, editable, and shareable.
Can I share a quiz I generated on Premium after downgrading to Free? Yes. All quizzes already in your Saved Quizzes library remain shareable via Simple Sharing regardless of your current plan. Smart Sharing for non-essay quizzes is also available under your Free plan’s one total Smart Sharing session if you have not used it yet.
What are the 5 premium trial credits exactly? Trial credits are one-time generation sessions that give you access to all Premium source types and features — file uploads, YouTube, multi-source, anti-cheating Smart Sharing, and more. Each credit covers one quiz generation session. They never expire and are available to all new accounts at no cost.
Is there a student discount or educator discount? QuizMagic does not currently offer a separate student or educator discount. However, the Free plan is available at no cost indefinitely, and the premium pricing is designed to be accessible for individual teachers. Contact support if you are inquiring about institutional pricing for a school or organization.
What happens to my Smart Sharing sessions when my Premium subscription expires? When a Premium subscription expires, active Smart Sharing session links continue to work for any sessions you created while on Premium. New Smart Sharing sessions, however, require an active Premium subscription. Your results data and analytics remain accessible in your dashboard regardless of plan status.
Can I switch between monthly and annual billing? Yes. You can switch from monthly to annual billing at any time through your account settings. The switch takes effect at your next billing date. Switching from annual to monthly takes effect when the current annual period ends.
What is the refund policy? QuizMagic offers a 15-day money-back guarantee on annual Premium subscriptions and a 5-day money-back guarantee on monthly Premium subscriptions. If you are not satisfied within the first 15 days, contact support for a full refund. See the Refund Policy for full terms.
