Step 1: Open the YouTube Source in the Quiz Generator
From your QuizMagic dashboard, locate the YouTube Link card in the source input panel. Click it to activate the YouTube URL field.
If you cannot see the YouTube Link card, confirm that your account has an active Premium subscription. The card appears greyed out with a Crown badge on Free accounts. Clicking the greyed-out card opens the upgrade prompt.
Step 2: Paste the URL and Confirm the Video
Paste your YouTube URL into the input field. Within a few seconds, QuizMagic fetches the video’s title, thumbnail, and duration and displays them as a preview below the field.
Confirm that the title and duration match the video you intended. This preview step is important. If you copied the wrong URL from a playlist or grabbed a short ad instead of the full lecture, you will catch it here before generating.
Accepted URL formats
All three of the following formats are accepted:

Number of questions
Set how many questions you want in the output. Premium users can generate up to 100 questions per quiz. As a practical guideline, 5 to 15 questions work well for most 5-to-25-minute videos. Longer videos with richer content can support higher question counts without quality degradation.
Difficulty
Choose Easy, Medium, or Hard. Difficulty calibrates the cognitive complexity of stems and the plausibility of distractors simultaneously. For a comprehension check after a beginner-level explainer, Easy is appropriate. For an analytical assessment after a complex lecture, Hard pushes the AI to produce scenario-based questions rather than simple recall.
Output language
By default, the AI detects the language of the video’s captions and generates questions in that language. To generate questions in a different language, for example, English questions from a Spanish-language video, or French questions from an English lecture, select your target language from the dropdown. More than 30 languages are supported.
Cognitive framework (optional)
Activate a cognitive framework to control the type of thinking each generated question demands.

Step 4: Generate the Quiz
Click Generate Quiz. QuizMagic retrieves the video transcript and sends it to the AI with a structured generation prompt. Most quizzes from a 10-to-20-minute video are ready in 20 to 40 seconds. Longer videos may take up to 90 seconds.
How transcript extraction works
QuizMagic uses a four-tier fallback system to extract the transcript, working through each method in order until one succeeds:
- Supadata API – fastest and most reliable for most public videos
- youtube-transcript library – open-source fallback used when the primary API cannot reach the video
- ytInitialPlayerResponse parsing – direct extraction from the YouTube player data, with intelligent track selection (English manual captions first, then English auto-generated, then any English track, then the first available track in any language)
- Raw HTML scraping – last-resort recovery for edge-case videos
This four-tier system means QuizMagic successfully generates quizzes from videos that fail on single-method tools. However, if none of the four methods can find a caption track, the video cannot be processed.
What the AI reads
The AI reads the full transcript text. It does not process the audio waveform, the visual video content, or any on-screen text that does not appear in the caption track. This means:
- A lecture where the presenter explains everything verbally produces strong questions
- A tutorial where key information is shown on screen but not narrated produces weaker questions
- A music video or ambient content video with few or no spoken words produces no useful questions
Step 5: Review, Save, and Share
When generation completes, your questions appear in the quiz editor. Review before saving.
What to check in the editor
Answer accuracy. Confirm that the marked correct answer is genuinely correct for each question. The AI is accurate, but a quick scan, particularly for True/False and Fill in the Blanks questions, catches any errors before students see them.
Coverage balance. For a long video, check whether the questions are spread across the video’s content or weighted toward the opening segment. If coverage is uneven, delete over-represented questions and use the Add Question button to manually write questions on under-represented sections.
Cognitive level accuracy. If you activated a framework, confirm that the question stems reflect the level you selected. A question tagged as Analyze should require students to examine a relationship or compare ideas, not simply recall a definition.
Open any question to edit the stem, change the correct answer, add or remove answer options, adjust the cognitive level badge, or delete the question entirely. When you are satisfied, save the quiz to your library.

Generating a Fresh Version From a Saved YouTube Quiz

When the YouTube source is not the right tool, for example, you want to generate a quiz from a PDF, these alternatives cover the same content from different angles.

Troubleshooting
“Video has no transcript” or “Could not extract transcript”
The four-tier extraction system failed on all methods. The most common causes are:
- The video creator manually disabled captions
- The video is too new for YouTube to have finished generating auto-captions (usually available within a few hours of upload)
- The video is age-restricted, members-only, or otherwise access-limited
Fix: Try a different upload of the same content, paste the transcript text directly into the Text source if you can access it, or switch to a related video on the same topic from a channel with captions enabled.
“Premium required” or Crown badge on the YouTube card
The YouTube source is gated to Premium. The Crown badge appears on the card when your account is on the Free plan.

The video preview does not appear after pasting the URL
The URL was not recognized as a valid YouTube link, or the video is not publicly accessible.
Fix: Confirm the URL is in one of the three accepted formats (watch?v=, youtu.be/, or embed/). Playlist URLs, channel URLs, and Shorts URLs in non-standard formats need to be converted to the standard video URL before pasting.
The quiz covers only the first few minutes of the video
This occasionally happens with very long videos where the transcript is very large. The AI processes as much content as fits within the generation window.
Fix: Raise the question count to push the AI to cover more of the video, or generate two separate quizzes from the same video. One for the first half and one for the second, by pasting transcript excerpts into the Text source.
Questions feel shallow or generic
The video likely has a sparse transcript – the speaker narrates very little of the key content verbally, or the captions are auto-generated from audio that is unclear.
Fix: Raise the difficulty setting, increase the question count, and switch the cognitive framework to Apply or Analyze. If quality remains low, switch to the Text source and paste the key spoken content from the video manually.

Can I regenerate a new quiz from the same video later?
Yes, in two ways. First, you can paste the same URL and generate it again. This counts as a new generation and fetches the transcript fresh. What if the video is not in English?
QuizMagic accepts captions in any language. The AI detects the caption language automatically and generates questions in that language by default. Use the Output Language setting to generate questions in a different language from the caption track, for example, English questions from a Mandarin-language lecture.
Can I use a YouTube Shorts URL?
YouTube Shorts can work if the Short has captions, but the standard URL format is required. Convert the Shorts URL to the youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID format before pasting. Shorts under 60 seconds typically produce very few questions because the transcript content is minimal.
